Principal’s Report
As the stage two submission deadlines approach and examinations commence, we find ourselves bidding farewell to our Year 12 learners who have reached a significant milestone in their educational journey. Our graduating class of 2023 will soon embark on new adventures and pursue their dreams beyond the learning spaces of Quorn Area School. It's a bittersweet moment as we celebrate their achievements and say goodbye.
These young minds have been an integral part of our school community for over a decade, and we have watched them grow academically, emotionally, and socially. They have witnessed many changes at our school and been offered a wealth of development opportunities, and we're confident that they are well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents, teachers, and staff who have supported these students throughout their journey. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable.
This stage of the school year also marks the beginning of the transition process, where we work with families to support children starting at school in 2024. We are excited to extend a warm and enthusiastic welcome to those learners as they prepare to embark on their journey with Quorn Area School. Whether you are new to the school or connecting for the first time, we are here to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible.
Starting school can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming, and we want to assure you that we are here to support you every step of the way. At Quorn Area School, each learner is a unique and valuable member of our community, and we are dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible.

Secondary Report

Our Year 12’s are at the end of the year, where they are busy finishing major tasks and preparing for exams. Their last day of formal lessons was last Friday. We farewelled Amaru, Alisha and Kai with a leaver’s assembly on Friday afternoon and reflected upon their thirteen years at Quorn Area School. It was enjoyable to hear from the learners who shared some memorable moments over the years, and they shared their plans beyond Year 12.

We wish Amaru, Alisha and Kai all the best for the future, and we will undoubtedly miss their friendly faces around the school. Congratulations to the Year 12 learners on a successful year as they anxiously await their results from the SACE board, which are released on Monday, the 18th of December.
Families, friends, and staff will attend the Year 12 dinner on Thursday, the 23rd of November, at Tickle Belly Hill. We are looking forward to sharing stories and celebrating our class of 2023.
Year 11’s
Our Year 11 learners will complete formal lessons on Thursday, the 23rd of November. They are encouraged to attend blocks of time during weeks 7 and 8 to gain a solid insight into the Stage Two Maths and English courses they will be undertaking in 2024. These lesson times include Mondays and Thursdays from 8:45 am-12 p.m. We look forward to seeing them there.
Vocational Education Training (VET)

Congratulations to Lachlan Holtham, who completed Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology at TAFE throughout the 2023 school year. Lachie has also completed his core SACE subjects at QAS this year, which will allow him to achieve his SACE at the end of 2024 with a mechanical apprenticeship—well done to Lachie for balancing his school work and TAFE commitments throughout this year.
We also have some current Year 10 learners applying to complete various VET courses through TAFE in 2024 as part of their Stage One studies.
Career Counselling
Over the coming weeks, I will contact the parents of Stage One and Stage Two learners who will complete their studies at QAS in 2024. Please spend some time conversing with your child so that we have a clear vision moving into 2024, with the explicit aim of supporting learners with their career paths where possible.
Work Inspiration Excursion

Late in Term 3, our Year 8-11 learners attended a 2-day Work Inspirations excursion to various workplaces in Port Augusta. Thanks to the support of The Smith Family, students were allowed to investigate various possible future career pathways.
McDonald's, Sun Drop Farms, Arid Lands, Max Cranes, Access Training Centre, Port Augusta Council and the Port Augusta Hospital provided QAS with an insight into the various careers at each establishment. Students could ask valuable questions and gain guidance and information regarding the next steps within multiple careers.
This is the third Work Inspirations excursion through the Growing Careers Project, which is supported and funded through our partnership with The Smith Family, and we look forward to another excursion in Term 3 of the 2024 school year.

Year 7 Transition
Our current Year 6 learners will transition into secondary school for English and Health and Physical Education lessons during weeks 8 and 9. We look forward to welcoming Shelby Finlay, Lucas Bury and Kylah Donald into the secondary school for 2024. We welcome a new student to QAS in Year 7 next year, Will O’Neill.

Drama Studies
For Drama studies last term, the Year 1/2/3 class chose a variety of short Readers Theatre plays to rehearse and perform. They performed for their families at the end of the term and did a fantastic job. Mrs Reed and Heidi Roberts (SSO) presented learners with a Certificate of Achievement and a small gift for their efforts.

Spanish Classes
The Year 4/5/6 Spanish class completed mini-research projects on different aspects of Spain and its culture/history. At the end of the term, learners spent some time cooking Spanish food, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Here, the learners were cooking Chirros
The Year 1/2/3 Spanish class cooked some traditional Spanish recipes last term; Chirros and Tortilla de Patata were on the menu! We thank Kylie McCarthy, Kat Scott, Heidi Roberts and Jacinda Harvie for their help with both classes. Parent participation is essential at times like these to enable learners to engage in learning in different ways.

Book Week – Literacy Group 3
Mrs Reed’s Literacy Group enjoyed reading the story of ‘Bev and Kev’ and making their own ‘unique’ giraffes. These were on display at the Quorn Show recently.
The learners had fantastic costumes and participated in the Book Week parade held in the gym late last term.

Holiday Swim

Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life-saving skills and basic swimming skills to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.
The aim of keeping the program affordable is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy Summer months, now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.
The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.
Royal Life Saving also offer pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
