Principal’s Report
Sports Day
Last Friday, our learners showed incredible determination as they sprinted, jumped, and cheered through various events. The cheers from the sidelines echoed the enthusiasm that filled the air as our young stars gave their all. It's heartwarming to witness the spirit of friendly competition amongst our learners.
At Quorn Area School Sports Day, we seek to ensure that every effort is celebrated. Whether it's a personal best in a race, a leap in the long jump, or simply the courage to participate, every learner's contribution is valued. These experiences instil a love for sports and important life skills such as resilience and perseverance.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers, parents, and volunteers who made this day possible. Your support and encouragement play a crucial role in nurturing the sportsmanship and talents of our young athletes.
Book Week
One of the most anticipated events of the primary school year is the Book Week Character Parade. Learners and teachers transformed into their favourite literary characters, filling the school with a kaleidoscope of colours, costumes, and characters. From superheroes to fairytale protagonists, each outfit showcased the diversity and creativity of our readers. Read, Grow, Inspire was the theme for 2023, and learners engaged in various activities during the week, culminating in a richly rewarding day of activities led by the teachers on Thursday, 24 August. We appreciate the additional work involved in such an event, and we would like to acknowledge the support and commitment of our primary school teachers. Building upon this success is a challenge that requires the support of all those engaged in young people's growth and development. Therefore, we ask that you join us in celebrating the joy of reading, inspiring one another, and spreading the magic of books far and wide throughout the year.
Industrial Action - 1 September 2023
I am writing to inform you that Quorn Area School will be closed on Friday, 1 September 2023, due to a vote for industrial action by members of the Australian Education Union at this site.
The Education Director has approved the closure on the grounds that insufficient staff will be on duty to enable me as Principal to ensure that adequate standards of learner safety and welfare can be provided.
Normal education programs will commence at the site from Monday, 4 September 2023.
At this stage, we are still determining if the OSHC will be available to cover the period of the industrial action. We have contacted Happy Haven, and we are awaiting an update. We will post a message on our website and send a Schoolzine message once confirmation is received.
Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding this information.

Sports Day
Yarrah 1486 defeated Kanyaka 1386
QAS held the annual Sports Day carnival last Friday, and the weather was magical. The day was an overall success. Thanks to Kyley McCarthy and Katrine Scott, along with their multiple helpers who assisted with the canteen on the day. We are lucky to have such enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the canteen runs smoothly. Hawker Area School joined us again this year, adding more competition in the age groups for the day. Thanks to Hawker for travelling to compete in the events for the day. I would also like to thank the parents/community members who assisted with the timing and measuring of the track and field events. Lastly, well done to all the student competitors. Witnessing our students' enthusiasm, encouragement, and teamwork in every age group was very pleasing. I was most impressed with the number of students mentoring others in their age groups and encouraging them to have a go. Well done to the house captains for their organisation in the lead-up to the day. The overall result was close, which reflected a great competition on the day.

SAPSASA Athletics
After analysing the results from Friday, we are currently picking our SAPSASA Athletics team, who will compete next Monday, the 4th of September, at Stirling North Primary School. Students born in 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2011 can participate. Consent forms will be sent home this week to successful athletes. Please ensure they are returned ASAP, as it is a tight time frame. We encourage parent transportation for the day, where possible.
Students may then be selected from this carnival to represent the Northern District in the State Carnival, which will be held at SANTOS Stadium in Adelaide on the 18th of September.

Athletics Mentoring
Well done to the Year 7-9 Health and Physical Education class, who successfully planned and implemented some athletics mentoring sessions for the primary classes. Each group designed a detailed plan during class and coordinated its implementation with equipment, focusing on teaching the technique. I was so impressed with the outcomes achieved. The secondary learners were enthusiastic in their delivery. You could tell that the primary students certainly improved their understanding of the track and field events throughout each session. The secondary learners are assessed on their mentoring planning, practical sessions and evaluations. Well done to all involved.
MNSEC Formal
MNSEC Formal was definitely a night to remember! Our learners danced their shoes off. Our learners danced ‘til their feet ached. We had so much fun socialising, making new friends, and sharing fun new experiences with new and old friends. We had an array of savoury and sweets that would fill their bellies… There were plenty of photo opportunities to showcase our learner’s fashion styles. We’re sure that our Year 11/12s made the best memories celebrating their formal.
EXPO
On Wednesday, the 16th of August, our Year 9-12 learners attended an excursion in Port Augusta.
The first organisation was a tour of Port Playford, the old Powerhouse site. Port Playford is an export facility that will offer storage, port and transhipment services for iron ore, connected to existing ore deposits by road and rail.
Students then visited the Global Maintenance Upper Spencer Gulf Trade Expo, which was located at the Port Augusta Central Oval. Learners had the opportunity to explore South Australia’s mining and resource sector and business opportunities and participated in specialist sessions.
Port Augusta TAFE was the last place visited. Students were lucky enough to participate in an experiment that allowed them to understand how to create hydrogen and use it to power a small motor.
Thanks to the Smith Family for supporting Quorn Area School with this career excursion.
Primary Report
Book Week
Last Thursday, we celebrated Book Week for 2023 with the theme Read, Grow, Inspire with a parade, story sharing, dance, and classroom activities. It was great to see so many of our learners dressing up as characters that inspire them. Thank you to everyone involved in making the day a great success.

1/2/3 Class News
P.E.
In the 1/2/3 class over the last few weeks, we have been learning the various skills to help us with attacking and defending in soccer. We have practised dribbling and passing accurately. In teams of five, we played a few games of soccer and put our skills into practice.
HASS
In our HASS unit this term, the 1/2/3 class have been learning about Celebrating Differences. In particular, different countries around the world. So far, we have learnt about Italy. We learnt to play the Italian game ‘Bocce’ and made pasta dough. This week, we will learn about China and make Chinese lanterns.
Numeracy
In Numeracy this term, we have looked at a range of concepts. We have learned about addition and place value, and most recently, we have been learning about subtraction and its relationship with addition. We started the topic by learning about various strategies to help us subtract, and now we are comparing that relationship to addition.

Holiday Swim Program
Holiday Swim is a Royal Life Saving Society South Australia initiative bringing affordable and educational swimming and water safety lessons to pools and inland waterway locations across Metro and Regional South Australia since the 1950s. The aim of the program is to teach children critical life-saving skills and basic swimming skills to equip them with the knowledge to stay safe in, on and around the water.
The aim of keeping the program affordable is to reach families and communities that might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to participate in swimming lessons, and as we approach the busy summer months, now is the time to equip them with the knowledge to save a life.
The program will be returning in December 2023 and January 2024 with the newly adapted Royal Life Saving Swim & Survive program.
Royal Life Saving also offers pathways into the aquatic industry with their ICONIC Bronze Awards. The Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Award of Merit and Distinction levels are designed for those wanting to further their knowledge and skill set before moving into the aquatic industry as Lifeguards and Swim Teachers within the local communities.
