Principal’s Report
Last week we received confirmation that the funding to remove six buildings from our school site has been secured for this financial year. The removal of these building represents a significant step as we seek to redesign our learning spaces to meet the changing needs of our students. Work is due to be completed before the end of June and we will keep you updated regarding developments. In addition to this during the coming weeks we will be completing the work outlined in our recent tree audit. A total of thirty-three trees are due to be removed with a further fifty-nine requiring intervention work. Whilst all current safety measures will be in place during the work we do encourage all community members to be aware of the risks if they are visiting the site outside of working hours during this time.
During 2017 we received feedback from a number of families regarding both the format and the timing of our academic reports. We believe that the switch to Daymap has not only resolved a number of issues relating to format but also led to a significant improvement in the content of the reports. As a result of feedback relating to the timing of reports we have made the following changes for 2018:
Term 1 – Full written report in
print format
Term 2 – Grades only report
Term 3 - Full written report available in both
electronic and print format
Term 4 – Grades only report
We believe that this format will give students the opportunity to reflect on their achievements and set targets for improvement during each semester. The addition of the grade only report will also give feedback on progress towards the achievement of those essential individual goals. We are also confident that the introduction of electronic reports will improve access for both students and families and enable them to fully reflect on their achievements and celebrate success. These electronic reports are part of the next stage of the Daymap rollout we are currently working towards and I will keep families updated on this important development.

This Friday we have National ‘Ride2School’ Day; it coincides nicely with the RAA lessons and recent visit from the Skate Park committee, who were seeking interest from our students in regards to the overall design.
Research shows that riding, scooting, skating or walking to school contributes to students’ physical activity level (recommended 60 min. minimum per day) and makes them more focused and ready to learn than those who are driven.
Meet at the Train Station at 8:20 Riding, Skating and Scooting will commence at 8:30. Remember safety first, bring along your helmets and if you would like to enter the competition, We have a ‘Decorative Wheels Prize’ up for grabs (Jazz up your mode of transportation to be in the running for a prize) |

Sports Day
Congratulations to all students who participated in Sports Day this year. It was wonderful to see our new sports shirts on display, they certainly looked fantastic!
It was magnificent day weather wise for the carnival and maximum student participation was apparent. I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped set up the shades and equipment for events on the morning. Also, a huge thank you to all of the families and community members who worked in the canteen and prepared food items for the day. It was great to have Hawker Area School here to support our Sports Day, as well as families from School of the Air. There were some amazing individual performances on display and some records were broken.
Well done to the House Captains on their preparation and organisation in the lead up to the day. They were involved in recording and preparing for running heats prior to the day and encouraging students to participate in events.
We have approximately 30 students from both QAS and Hawker AS representing us at the MNSEC carnival in Jamestown today. We wish them all the best for their events and have no doubt that they will represent us in a positive light. We look forward to hearing results. Students who excel today in Jamestown should be selected to represent the region in Adelaide later in the term.
