Principal’s Report

Last week we had the opportunity to share both our journey and achievements with the Department for Education’s review team as part of our 2019 External School Review. While the final report will not be published until later this term, we are very pleased with both the findings of the review and the recommended future directions. The review team met with groups representing every aspect of our work, and I would like to express thanks to those who gave their time freely to support the process. Special thanks go out to the caregivers and Governing Council members who volunteered to meet the review team to discuss our journey and to the learners who talked about the processes in place to support their learning and prepare them for their futures.

I would also like to express thanks to the caregiver who volunteered their time to support our NAIDOC activities in week two. The day was a great success that offered our learners a wonderful opportunity to explore the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Special thanks also go to Sarah Bury for her leadership of the day.

Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Gwen Martin, who will be joining us next week in the role of Aboriginal Education Worker. We are pleased to have Gwen on board working alongside teachers to further enhance the learning opportunites we provide

Principal’s Day

It was Principal’s Day on Thursday 1st August, so the school, unbeknown to Andrew, gathered around the flagpole with ties on to surprise him. It was a great opportunity for us to acknowledge all the work he has done for our school and to also thank him for leading us to where we are today. Principals all over Australia shoulder so much responsibility for the development of children therefore we thought a round of applause (with a tie on) were necessary.

Recorder Consort South Australia

On Thursday 8th August, we were lucky enough to have a visit from eight very talented primary and secondary schools students who make up an ensemble of highly talented recorder performers. The ensemble demonstrated a wide range of repertoire using the full range of recorders. Amelia Monaghan who is the leader of school music program development led the ensemble in arrangements from rock to medieval music. The entire performance was truly engaging and interactive with some of our students taking on the role of kings and queens from the Medieval and Renaissance period. It was great to see some of our students engaged in asking meaningful questions and interested in the different types of recorders and having a go at playing them.

100 Days of School

Earlier this term the Foundation students were lucky enough to celebrate their 100 days of school. As you can see they were very excited and very proud to be 100 days smarter! Look to the next newsletter for more photos and details about this special day.

Sports Day

Sports Day is scheduled for Friday the 16th of August after cold weather forced us to postpone last Fridays initial plans. Students in Years 2-12 will meet in their House areas at the beginning of the day – 8:45am and have their attendance recorded. Yarrah will meet in the GC4 classroom and Kanyaka will meet in GC5 with their respective house captains.

The Foundation and Year 1 students will meet in the Foundation classrooms in the morning to have their attendance recorded and organise their groups for the modified events. At 8:55am they will head down to the oval to commence the carnival with their 100m dash event.

I have attached the program below for both the F/1 modified activities as well as the main program for Yr 2 -12 students.

There will be a canteen open on the day and there will be no need to place orders. The menu will be distributed to families in the coming days.

Walking Wednesdays

We have been participating in ‘Walking Wednesdays.’ We meet at the Railway Station each Wednesday at 8:20am and earn a point for your house. This is encouraging students to walk to school and increase their daily activity levels. We currently have around 20 students who are participating. Come and join in the fun!

Toastie Tuesday

Place your order at the front office and come down to the Canteen at first break.

MNSEC 5-A-SIDE SOCCER

On Thursday 1st August, selected year 8-9 learners attended the MNSEC 5-a-side soccer at Booleroo Centre District School.

Our Boys team included William Bennett, Austin Clancy, Isaac Finlay, Lachlan Finlay, Dayne Hancock, and Joshua Parrott.

Our Girls team included: Mackenzie Chapman, Emily Taylor, Lara Filsell, Mhatika Harradine-Wilton and Brooke Maison.

It was tough competition for our boys who mostly competed in back-to-back matches against Gladstone, Booleroo, Jamestown and Orroroo. Our boys persevered through each match managing to score 2 goals. On the other hand, our girls triumphed managing a draw against Booleroo which was enough to progress them into the Grand Final. It was a great opportunity for our learners to have competitive fun. I want to congratulate our learners for their incredible sportsmanship and their excellent efforts on the day to best represent our school. Well done everyone!

Thank you to Sarah for organising our teams, Vicki, Tanya, and Dani for your support.
