Principal’s Report

As the 2019 school year draws to a close, I would like to thank the school community for your continued support and the staff for their unwavering commitment to our school priorities in improving learning for all learners. Learning was the focus of our Presentation Evening this week, where we gathered to celebrate the achievements of all learners across the full spectrum of learning that our school offers. This event celebrates growth, academic achievements, sporting success, and personal qualities, and I would like to thank the community for their strong support in recognising the endeavours of these fine young people.

As this is our last newsletter of the year, I would like to thank the teachers who will begin a new chapter in 2020 for their service to the school. Joachim Pilz is retiring from the Department for Education, and we wish him well on his retirement as he heads back to Victoria. Mari Ikiua-Brooks is currently recuperating following surgery, and we wish both her and her family all the very best and a speedy recovery. Mari is planning to start her new job in Adelaide in 2020. In farewelling our Y12 learners, I would like to thank both them and their families for their contribution to our school over the years. We are confident that their experiences at Quorn Area School will leave them well-equipped to thrive in their chosen pathways.

Work will continue on upgrades to our facilities during the forthcoming vacation, and I ask that all visitors to the site adhere to both the cordons and safety notices.

Finally, I would like to wish all of our learners and their families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Graduation Dinner

On November 15th we farewelled our 2019 Year 12 students with a dinner held at the Quangdong Café. I would like to thank Pat and her team for catering outside of her normal working hours to support our school community, something we are all very grateful for. We have made a conscious effort in the last few years to support local businesses with our Graduation dinners to repay the support they have shown to us here at Quorn Area School. Even though it was a relatively small group, we all enjoyed ourselves and each other’s company, reflecting on the school years that have now come to an end. I would also like to thank Ethan Baker who volunteered his time and skills to help serve our dinner on the night.

As always, it is sad to see a good group of Year 12’s leave our school, but it is a very proud moment for us as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. So to all the graduates of 2019 I wish you all the best for your futures and no matter what happens Quorn Area School will always be here to help you on your way.

Senior School Transition

This year we began our 2020 Transition in Week 6 which has allowed our secondary students to settle into new routines and continue on their learning journey. The main aim of this transition is to prepare the learners for 2020 and to ensure they know that the work they are doing is relevant, meaningful and counts toward their Term 1 written reports. Our teachers have been very busy planning and delivering exciting lessons to engage our student’s right though until Friday 13th December.

Our future Year 11 and 12 learners have already begun working on major assignments that count toward their SACE results in 2020. This is going to be a huge advantage for these learners as it takes some of the pressure off for next year and allows them to get a head start on their competition. In the past our SACE students have not attended school in Week 9 of Term 4 and this will come down to the choice of parents after discussion with the school. We as a secondary staff will still be running classes for these learners to come in and work with us to get themselves in a great position for 2020.

If you have any questions about the current transition process please contact me either by phoning the school or via email matt.griffiths310@schools.sa.edu.au

Thanks to everyone for their support throughout the year and I am already looking forward seeing more growth from our learners in 2020. Have a happy and safe holiday.

Primary Report

Just like that, we are at the end of another busy year celebrating everything from success and growth to new experiences and learning opportunities. 2019 has proven to be another year where both students and teachers have raised the expectation to demonstrate quality teaching and learning within our cohort.

As a team, we have been lucky enough to be at the forefront of many new initiatives and have taken every opportunity to grow as individuals in this profession. We have worked alongside schools to support them with the moderation of Big Write and worked closely with Corwin, to share our Visible Learning journey with others wanting to learn more about our successes.

As the (F-6) Coordinator this year, I have enjoyed working with students across all year levels. I can proudly share that the growth among the primary cohort has been amazing and outshining many other sites. I look forward to next year and cannot wait to continue working with the Primary students and teachers, to assist in implementing programs and promoting further growth.

We are lucky to be apart of an Area School for so many reasons, however in regards to transition from primary to secondary we are extremely lucky. We wish our year six students the best of luck as they venture across the cave to begin secondary school in 2020.

Quorn School Community Library News

The Children’s University program provides learners extra-curricular learning opportunities and superior educational experiences outside of school, and recognises their achievements through the award of formal certificates and a graduation ceremony. This year we had the privilege to be part of a trial and are keen to continue this exciting partnered program with The University of Adelaide next year.

On Thursday 28th November 2019, we celebrated the achievements of our very first Children’s University graduates to represent Quorn Area School at Port Pirie Memorial Oval. It was truly amazing to see the smiles, fun, and excitement, not just from our graduates but also families and community members from several regional areas that brought us together. We were also fortunate to have met Mayor Leon Stephens of Port Pirie inspiring our children with his speech. Of course, most of the time was spent taking photographs prior to and after the ceremony – making many memories which will be cherished forever. It was clear that being recognised at a formal ceremony along with wearing the graduate gowns and hats (mortarboards) was definitely a new yet unforgettable feeling for our learners. After several photos, graduate attires were returned, and we enjoyed the free and unlimited BBQ after the ceremony!

It is with great pleasure to announce and celebrate the achievements of Quorn Area School’s first CUA Graduates :

Ebonie Werth
Georgia Shannon
Tasnuba (Sarah) Anjum

We would like to thank all the families who have supported our graduates to achieve their very best:

Aileen and Anthony, Lyvernne, and Shamimul and Rina.

Last but certainly not least, special thanks to all the hardwork and dedication that Luca Prisciandaro and the CUA Adelaide team gave to ensure transport with Spencer Gulf Coachline, catering, and all other aspects of the event and program ran swiftly and smoothly.

This program paved the way for our learners to exercise self-directed learning beyond the classroom. CUA fosters wellbeing by promoting ‘free range learning’, encouraging children to try out new activities, discover new passions, visit new places and above all, HAVE FUN!

If you would like to know more about this program please contact me via the school or email at megan.novillos702@schools.sa.edu.au

Lawn Bowls

As part of their Health and PE lesson this term, the Years 4-6 and 8-10 classes have been participating in lawn bowls. I would like to thank the amazing volunteers from the Quorn Bowling Club who have given up their time to assist the students with techniques and scoring as we have really appreciated this opportunity. I have included some photos from the sessions.

Miscellaneous Reports

Jenny Crisp Northern SAPSASA Acknowledgement

I would like to acknowledge Jenny Crisp’s amazing career within the Northern SAPSASA district. Below is some information which highlights her career within a number of different roles. Congratulations to Jenny for being awarded with a certificate to acknowledge her dedication towards School Sport in South Australia.

Jenny Crisp first started her involvement with SAPSASA in 1998 when she coached the NORTHERN SAPSASA Netball team at the State carnival in Adelaide. She also coached the netball team in 1999.

The following year, 2000, she switched to the position of coach/manager of the NORTHERN SAPSASA Tennis team to participate at the State Carnival in Adelaide. Jenny has continued in that position every year until she finished up at last year’s carnival. In the time that Jenny has spent as district coach/manager she has encouraged many children in her beloved sport of tennis, giving many children a start in the sport and helping to refine the skills of others providing countless hours of coaching. Many adults playing in the local tennis clubs in Pt.Augusta and Quorn look back fondly on their SAPSASA involvement. Jenny has also been a passionate advocate for giving opportunities to country children in the sport.

As district coach/manager, Jenny was always super organised, so much so that SAPSASA actually appointed her as Venue Convenor one year without actually realising she wasn’t a teacher.

In her post-carnival report Jenny reflected that her involvement with SAPSASA “has been one of the highlights of my career in DECD.” Jenny has retired from the Department this year and for 21 years of outstanding service to NORTHERN SAPSASA teams participating in State Carnivals I wish to nominate her for a School Sport SA award.
