Principal’s Report

We presented the 2020 Annual Report to the school community at our Governing Council AGM on Thursday, 4 March. Despite the shadow of COVID-19, the report highlighted numerous achievements and improvements in data secured during this most taxing of years. We will upload the document onto our website before the end of this term, and we welcome your feedback. Our next Governing Council meeting will be on Thursday 25 March, and we still have vacancies for 2021. We have moved the start time to 5:30pm and agreed that it would conclude at 6:30pm. We hope that this change will support younger children's caregivers and offer certainty around the arrangements necessary to commit to the remaining seven meetings in 2021.

Over recent weeks I have spoken to several caregivers regarding their safety concerns during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Our school zone on West Terrace is unique in that it covers a distance of 244m, starting at First Street and ending between the rail track and Flinders Ranges Way. This stretch of road includes two pedestrian exits, two car park exits and three side roads. We have published a guide to our Koala crossing in this newsletter that details all road users' responsibilities. We seek your support in raising awareness across our community as it requires everyone to do the right thing every day.

Finally, as the summer sports season draws to a close, I would like to express thanks on behalf of the school community to all of those involved in activities during this term. The personal achievements, enjoyment, and friendships that grow from participation in sport always need volunteers to thrive.

National Day of Action Against Bullying And Violence 2021

Friday 19th March

A MESSAGE FROM THE PREFECTS………

This Friday is ‘BULLYING NO WAY! DAY’. QAS Prefects, with the support of staff, have decided to acknowledge this important day in various ways. We ask that students dress in the colour red or orange and wear odd socks to express individuality and understand that everyone is unique and should not be bullied because of it.

8:15AM – MEET AT TOWN HALL WITH YOUR BIKE

  • We will begin the day by celebrating ‘National Ride to School Day.’
  • We are asking students to meet at the Town Hall at 8.15am with their bikes and we will ride to school together with some teachers and SSO’s.

DECORATE YOUR BIKE COMPETITION

  • There will be some milkshake vouchers for the best decorated bikes. Deck your bike out in the colours red and orange in support for BULLYING NO WAY!
  • All bike riders will receive a piece of fruit on arrival at school.
  • Remember – Safety comes first. WEAR YOUR HELMET!

PRIMARY LEARNERS – ANTI BULLYING SESSIONS

The Prefects have planned and will be facilitating some learning sessions for the Primary classes. Four groups will be formed with a combination of year levels and each group will rotate through four different sessions with a strong focus on the awareness of bullying. These sessions will begin at 11:15am and conclude at 1pm under the supervision of the Primary teachers. Secondary students will participate in some bullying awareness during their Health lessons.

SAUSAGE SIZZLE

There will be a complimentary sausage sizzle available for all students in the second break and will be served near the cave.

Primary Report

Year 3/4 Class with Miss Tomney

Time has flown in the Year 3/4 class this term.

In Maths, we have been focusing on a range of concepts, however our main focus is on understanding and making large numbers. With these large numbers, students have been working out different problems they can make with those particular numbers. We have also been looking at different ways to make equal equations. You can see in the picture that these numbers were not equal.

In the Arts, we have been focusing on music. Learners have been practising singing a song and playing a ukulele, which they have all improved so much. It was a big learning step at the start of the year. I am sure some students have come home wanting to sing some songs!

Learners have been introduced to some basic concepts in Spanish, such as colours, days of the week and months and numbers to 20. Learners are confident saying most of their colours in Spanish, we are still learning the days of the week and months of the year which are a bit more challenging. To remember some of the Spanish words we made a chatterbox which everyone enjoyed making and using. Ask your child if they can say some of the colours in Spanish to you, they might even teach you a colour or two!

Please take the time to allow your child to read to you and ask them what they are learning in the classroom, as we are learning so much!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email or make and appointment to see me at school.

Free Breast Cancer Screening in Port Augusta

BreastScreen SA’s mobile screening unit is now visiting Port Augusta to provide free breast cancer screening (breast X-rays) for more than 1700 local women.

Screening appointments are available from now until mid-May 2021, with the mobile screening unit located in the car park of the Central Oval Community Sporting Hub, Port Augusta.

Having regular (two yearly) screening mammograms is the best way to detect breast cancer early, often before it can be felt. The two biggest risk factors for developing breast cancer are being a woman and being over 50, with 9 out of 10 women diagnosed having no family history of the disease.

The earlier a breast cancer is found, the more chance a woman has of successful treatment.

If you’re a woman aged over 40, especially 50 to 74, call BreastScreen SA on 13 20 50 and make your free appointment for a breast screen, or visit the link below to find out more.
