Continued Learning at QAS

As the situation with COVID-19 evolves, as a site we will continue to plan and operate in accordance with advice from the Department for Education and SA Health to support the safety and wellbeing of staff, students and the broader community.

Without overwhelming you with information today, we have compiled a document outlining details that, with any luck, will answer some questions you may have in relation to continued learning during this time.

QAS_Community_Letter.pdf

Today our Minister announced 4 pupil free days before Easter. Staff at QAS will be using that time to plan and prepare for new models of learning that can be delivered consistently to our learners at home and at school.

It has been great to hear from learners today who are embracing at home learning, I look forward to hearing about more online learning adventures and cooking lessons.

COVID-19 Update 26.03.19

F-6 Big Talk Homework

For Big Write this week learners are writing an Informative text. Your topic for discussion tonight is ‘Why is it important to train your pet?’

Can you think of some up-levelled V.C.O.P for your writing tomorrow?

V = Vocabulary - Wow Words

C= Connective – words that join ideas together

O= Openers – amazing ways to start a sentence. Words that end in ‘ly’ or ‘ing’ are power openers

P= Punctuation – Practice your Kung Fu Punctuation

If you are learning from home here is a basic outline of the THURSDAY Big Write:

  • Learners have 10 minutes to plan for their Big Write, following on from their Big Talk the previous night. They can record what they would like to say, when, and ensure that they have all of the important elements that they'd like to cover in their text.
  • Now is the time for a 10 minute Brain Break. Get up and have a good shake or run around for 10 minutes. Toilet and drink breaks are also helpful here.
    • The 5/6's they now have 45 minutes for their writing time.
    • The 2/3/4's, 1/2's and Foundation classes have 30 minutes for their writing.
  • At 8-10 minute intervals, learners are reminded to use WOW words, larger words, connectives, better sentence Openers, and higher levels of punctuation.
  • The last 5 minutes of their writing time is used to up level their writing. A final opportunity make any improvements that they'd like to really show their learning.

Good luck

COVID 19 Increased Protocols – Site Level

Although its business as usual in our classrooms, over the coming days we will be planning for increased protocols on our site. Unfortunately, the first will be in place tomorrow and that is minimising traffic onsite. To do this we have already asked that support services cease their visits and also our much appreciated volunteers.

We will also be implementing a supervised pick up and drop off zone on Stokes Road. We strongly encourage you to use this zone and if you choose to use another site access, please remain outside the gates. I will be on duty in the mornings to meet and greet you, offering any support that I can.

The library has been closed to our learners temporarily, whilst our library staff work to implement a click and collect system.

I understand that in these ever changing times, some of our families are feeling overwhelmed and anxious. This is completely normal and rest assured you are doing an amazing job as parents and caregivers of our learners.

I am always available to chat over the phone and if I can’t take your call immediately, I will endeavour to contact you as soon as possible. Thank you to those parents who have already phoned in to have a chat.

Thankyou in advance,
Monique
