Choir

The QAS choir is made up of a group of committed and enthusiastic students from Years 4, 5 and 6. We are one part of the Primary Schools Music Festival (PSMF) choir in the Port Augusta region. Each year we learn around 15 songs as provided by the PSMF organisers. We meet to rehearse at least three mornings a week during Care group and attend three to four regional rehearsals before performing in a regional concert. All choir students have the opportunity to audition for soloist parts. The final concert is usually around the end of Term 3 each year. Our choir also performs throughout the year during school assemblies and special occasions.

MNSEC Showcase

The annual MNSEC Performing Arts Showcase Concert includes students from Booleroo Centre District Area, Gladstone High, Jamestown Community, Orroroo Area, Quorn Area and Peterborough High School. The concert is held at the Peterborough Town Hall and showcases some of the best up-and-coming young talent in the region and contains a huge variety of acts. Choirs, bands, ensembles, pianists, singers, guitarists, drummers and soloists will all grace the stage. In the hall there is also a display of artistic work by art and technical studies students.

Knock-Out Sport

Quorn Area School participates in a range of Knockout Sporting Carnivals including Netball, Football, Cricket and Tennis. Please contact the Physical Education teacher for further information.

SAPSASA

Throughout the year, SAPSASA holds various State Carnivals and State Championships for a number of sports. They can be district-based teams or school based teams depending on the sport. Students are nominated by the school and attend district training and sections.

MNSEC Sport

MNSEC supports an organised competition between the cluster schools; in athletics, swimming, football and netball. Combined MNSEC teams then compete against other schools at a regional and state level in these sports.

Each year, the MNSEC Swimming Carnival is held at the Booleroo Centre Swimming Pool on the Tuesday evening of week 4 (term 1). Students in Years 6-12 are eligible and selection is based from the results of the QAS Swimming Carnival.

The MNSEC Athletics Carnival is held at Jamestown Community School and also takes place during term 1. The QAS team is selected from the results of the QAS Sports Day. Students in Years 6-12 travel to attend this day, either to participate or support their peers.

SSSA Sport

Secondary School Sports SA conducts numerous competitions as knockout championships throughout the school year. These competitions are open to all South Australian schools, including those in both the private and public systems.

MNSEC Formal

During each year, MSNEC schools combine to celebrate student achievement with a Formal for senior secondary students. Year 11 & 12 students are eligible to attend this event. Information regarding the Formal is available during care group times closer to the event.

Camps

Camps and excursions are seen to be an integral part of the educational program offered to students at QAS from Foundation – Year 10. The camps and excursions program reflects the needs of students and provides educational experiences which enhance the vision of the world in which they live. We believe that camps and excursions allow students to develop responsibility, leadership and independent living skills, to name only a few.

Quorn Area School has a strong working and learning history with the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society, where students in Year 10 can develop an understanding of local history, work in the community and the trades available to learn etc. The program is designed to run in Year 10 and assist in developing workplace skills required for the workplace. This is also designed to complement the VET programs that run at QAS.

VET

VET (Vocational Education and Training) provides students with the skills and knowledge needed for work. It includes practical, hands-on learning, which suits many students. Students can gain qualifications recognised nationally with further education post school.

Studying VET as part of your SACE enables you to get a head start on a qualification, which is a great way to fast-track your progress towards a rewarding career. VET operates through a national training system, particularly for trades and other industries. It is delivered, assessed, and certified by registered training organisations (RTOs), including TAFE SA.

White Card Training (Running with VET)

At Quorn Area School, we offer students 'White Card' training, a general work health safety induction for construction work sites. Under the WHS legislation, workers on construction sites in Australia must undertake the 'White Card training' and have evidence of their attendance from the course before they are permitted to commence work or enter a construction site.
