Quorn Area School is a vibrant and supportive learning community, nestled in the beautiful Flinders Ranges. Our school caters for Foundation students through to Stage 2, Year 12 students.
We seek to ensure our students are engaged actively in their learning and developing confidence in their abilities to take on challenges, both academically and in extra-curricula activities. Students are encouraged to develop their critical and creative thinking while developing a growth mindset. As per our motto “Prepare for Life”.
SCHOOL HISTORY
It is remarkable to recall our ancestors who seventy odd years ago attended one of the many local, one-teacher schools, and later being fortunate enough to proceed to Quorn High School for further education. A Provisional School was opened when a minimum of six children were available for enrolment. The State Education Department provided the teacher and paid part of the salary.
Students often had to travel several miles each way to school, and most had to walk, the lucky ones being able to ride a horse or travel in a pony cart.
QUORN PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Quorn Primary School opened in 1879 as a provisional school in charge was Mr William James George, with an average daily attendance of 36 children. By 1881 the enrolments had increased and the daily average attendance numbered 73, taking the school out of the provisional classification to that of public school. In 1883 the total enrolments were 226 with the daily average 91. In 1892 the staff was increased to two teachers, the average daily attendance being 149.4.
QUORN HIGH SCHOOL
The Quorn High School played a big part in the education of the youth of the northern part of the State. Prior to 1990, students who had successfully completed their primary schooling were able to continue their education within the primary school. In 1909 the number of secondary students made it necessary for some alterations to this scheme.
In 1914 the building on Railway Terrace was officially declared a High School, the first in the Northern area. Mr. Sydney S. Molls was appointed as headmaster, the average daily attendance being 18.4. The enrolments steadily increased by 1921 to 40.8. The building was built as a result of sufficient funds raised by the people of Quorn led by their Mayor, Mr. Robert Thompson.
In 1968 the Quorn High School became part of the newly formed Quorn Area School.
QUORN AREA SCHOOL
The Area School was formed in 1968 when the High School and Primary School were combined with Mr. J. Marshall as the headmaster. The following year the primary school students vacated the primary school in Second Street and moved into the new buildings erected behind the High School buildings on West Terrace. The two new buildings of Samcon construction, housed the primary classrooms and the administrative section, which contained the office, library, staff-room, canteen and storeroom.
