Principal’s Report
The NAPLAN test cycle has been completed for 2018 and I am pleased to note the high levels of engagement our learners brought to this national assessment. Every year the NAPLAN tests are accompanied by conflicting and confusing reports in the media regarding the purpose and validity of the assessment. As a site we use a variety of measures to assess our progress and NAPLAN is currently the main tool we have to accurately measure the success of our learning programs. The data provided enables us to review schoolwide initiatives linked to both Literacy and Numeracy and assess the impact they are having on the learners of Quorn Area School. The results will give us a clear indication of our current achievements and provide essential feedback for teachers on how they can further support the learning in their classrooms.
Earlier this morning our Tear Ten learners embarked on the annual careers trip to Adelaide. During their four days in Adelaide and surrounding areas they will have the opportunity to experience firsthand a variety of career opportunities. We hope they will not only be inspired to think creatively about their futures but also return ready to plot a rewarding post school pathway. From 2019 this will become a biennial event for Years nine and ten as we seek to both inspire our learners and prepare them more thoroughly for the ever changing world of their futures.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the immense contribution made my Nicole Kaesler during her time at Quorn Area School. Nicole was an integral part of the school for over twenty years and we wish both Nicole and her family all the best as she leaves to explore new opportunities.

In Science we have been learning about the four seasons and weather. We have been using weather frames to observe the weather outside and using dress ups as an activity to learn about the types of clothes people wear in different seasons.
In Maths we have been exploring patterns. We have been using objects around the classroom to make patterns. These photos show some examples of patterns students have made.

MNSEC 9 a Side Football @ Jamestown
On Thursday the 10th of May, seven of our middle school students travelled over to Jamestown to participate in the Mick Redden 9-a-side Football Carnival. Our students teamed up with the Booleroo Community District School and were involve in a number of modified matches throughout the day. Our students were an absolute pleasure to watch and certainly displayed a high level of skill throughout their games. The Booleroo/Quorn mix resulted in the schools taking out the shield for ‘Team spirit’. It was fantastic to see students mixing so enthusiastically from different schools.
Declan Finlay, Lachie Finlay (8/9 boys), Emily Eckert and Zoe Maloney (8/9 Girls) were picked to represent MNSEC in the Knockout Football Competition of which the games will be played later this term. Meggan Finlay is also representing QAS in the Open Girls Knockout MNSEC team. We are looking forward to hearing all about their experiences later in the term.
I would like to thank Tanya Finlay for her assistance in supporting our students on the day. Without parent support, events such as these cannot be possible.

Young Environmental Leaders
Thursday afternoon involved a visit from Cameron Watson, a Park Ranger from Natural Resources Management Northern York. Cameron explained the leadership aspects of the students role as leaders and how the ‘Kids teaching Kids’ programme will unfold during this year and culminating at the final forum. The students will be researching aquaponics as well as constructing an indoor system before venturing to an outdoor wall. The information gained from their activities will enable them to showcase and instruct other students in the key elements of a successful system as well as how to construct one.
Looking forward to “tasting” their growing success!!
